DAL EM
HOW WE TRAIN
at Dal EM
AIRWAY
Work with world leaders in airway management with unparalleled in-situ and simulated learning and research opportunities. The broad airway scope of Dal EM residents gives us frequent exposure to difficult airway scenarios using state-of-the-art tools like fiberoptic scopes and video laryngoscopy - led by the AIME airway team.
CADAVER
Practice life-saving skills frequently in our high-fidelity cadaver program unlike any other in the country. Skills sessions include opportunities to practice complex airway procedures, thoracotomies, thoracostomies, ultrasound, urological and suturing, and learner-directed sessions for skills practice.
RESUSCITATION
Gain a mastery of resuscitation from our local resus experts including the team behind theresuscourse.com. On and off service, EM residents at Dal gain frequent resuscitation leadership experience.
BALANCE
Taking "wellness" beyond a curriculum, our close group of residents prioritize balance, mental health, family, and friendship. With quarterly group counselling sessions, flexible maternity and paternity leave, and a culture of mutual support, our program respects the humanity and autonomy of our residents.
PEDS EM
We take care of sick kids. Our residents train at the IWK, where they care for pediatric patients and pathology from the entirety of the Maritimes. Residents have the opportunity to combine their Adult EM training with longitudinal PEM shifts at the IWK in addition to their focused PEM blocks.
EMS
Industry-leading experts teach our residents EMS operations, leadership skills, and direct prehospital care delivery. Get involved with our LifeFlight fixed-wing and helicopter-based critical care team. Work in our specialized emergency department with integrated department paramedics and learn from their breadth of experience while getting connected with our crews.
SIMULATION
In our new simulation bay adjacent to the ED, learn how to manage crisis confidently in our high-frequency simulation program, tailored for junior, senior, and interdisciplinary scenarios.
Skills sessions include opportunities to practice complex airway procedures, thoracotomies, thoracostomies, ultrasound, urological and suturing, and learner-directed sessions for skills practice.

At the IWK, learn from our PEM experts during our frequent interdisciplinary pediatric and obstetrical simulations.
Trauma
With early exposure to longitudinal resident trauma team leader roles and our immersive EM-led trauma service, Dal EM residents lead across the full scope of trauma care and research and work closely alongside the TraumaNS team.
RESEARCH
Our residents are well supported to create a research career that matches their goals. With flexible resident projects ranging from trauma to prehospital to addictions to FOAMed, Dal EM lets you guide your research path - with plentiful support from departmental and univerisity research support.
